Miss Sharon Jones!

A soulful voice comes from the gut even when pancreatic cancer threatens to derail her music career in this documentary on Sharon Jones, who’s been mentioned as a “female James Brown.” Along with Daptone Records (“where musicians make the music, and we stay out of their way”) bandmates the Dap-Kings, the film traces her from a child in South Carolina to an inspirational soul singer out of Augusta, Georgia who appeared on Ellen and Fallon after having been told years before by a Sony rep that she was “too short, too dark and too old” to be a music star. But it was her fifth LP, Give The People What They Want, that earned the band a Grammy nomination with Sharon’s “listen, learn and do” approach to her music. Dealing with financial difficulties, a postponed release date for the record and chemo, the movie is about determination during the middle of a career that shines through!
