Daughters of the Dust

Crisp coastal contingent of women prepare for a family exodus to the mainland up north from barrier islands off South Carolina and Georgia but first must struggle with the traditions from where they came. Poetic, historical record of Gullah culture as the Peazant family congregates to rediscover their African-American roots and embrace an emotional farewell to their ancestral mother who has decided to stay behind since there’ll be no need for the old woman’s magic. Stunning cinematography for this 1991 film by Julie Dash that is receiving its 25th anniversary restoration after being inducted into the National Film Registry.
