Girl Asleep
Director Rosemary Myers’ film – complete with Saul Bass-esque credits – is about a high school girl’s impending birthday, metaphorically revamped as Sleeping Beauty staged as an ’80s Aussie rock music video. Surrounded by her childhood memories full of origami and music boxes, everyone is out to corrupt and influence Greta, from a trio of mean girls to her hippie-clad big sister and the local school nerd, when all she wants is to fantasize about the forest and figure stuff out. Bethany Whitmore straddles the role with equal amounts of fear and anticipation as she blossoms from cardboard backpack benchwarmer into her own woman.
