The Fits

Not unlike a hip-hop Picnic At Hanging Rock, this movie captures the allegorical wonder of a pre-teen named Toni, played by Royal Hightower, who rigorously trains at a boxing gym but desires to fit in with the Cincinnati school drill team. Her voyeuristic longings to be accepted by the “older” girls takes on a somewhat supernatural feel as seizures and fainting spells afflict the dance troop but Toni never once falls ill, even though her friends hope to be affected if it’s a rite of passage to join the drill team. Accompanied by a soundtrack of ambient woodwinds and surface noises of handclaps and rhythmic slaps of boxing gloves, the focus is on Toni’s quiet resolve.
