Trey Wright: Something Better Beginning
As a music professor at Kennesaw State University and a veteran of the award-winning Athens/Atlanta band Squat, Trey Wright has shared his talents over the years with area students and fans. His new solo album Begin Again celebrates the great talents he’s encountered throughout his career while introducing new listeners to a key cog in regional jazz.
The album teams Wright with award-winning Lyle Lovett saxophonist Mace Hibbard, fellow educator and well-traveled drummer Marlon Patton and others. The all-star jazz lineup breathes life into album-opener “From Now On” and five other instrumentals. Three additional songs feature vocalist Laura Coyle (pictured here with Wright), including two originals and a gorgeous cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Hissing of Summer Lawns.”
Drop in for Coyle’s beautiful rendition of a Mitchell standard, even if you know next to nothing about jazz. Then do yourself a favor and stick around for the uplifting shared vision of some of the South’s finest jazz talents.
The album release party (featuring Coyle) takes place March 1 at the Red Light Café. Wright also performs March 13 at the Elliott Street Deli & Pub.
