Allied
Many of my favorite movies are about Parisians during the Vichy government: Jean-Pierre Melville’s Army of Shadows, Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book and Jean-Paul Rappereau’s Bon Voyage. Brad Pitt is Max, an intelligence officer stationed in North Africa, Casablanca to be exact, who’s been given the task of assassinating a regional Nazi officer while posing as the husband of Marianne (Marion Cotillard of La Vie en Rose), a French Resistance fighter. After their mission is completed, they move to London to start a family but suspicion of loyalties hamper their plans. The tension hinges on “is she or isn’t she” what accusations claim and what lengths is he willing to go to disprove those claims. Excellent regard for time period as the threat of the London blitz looms overhead.
