Combat Obscura
If Brian Di Palma’s Redacted was the Reefer Madness of Iraqi war films, then this is the Afghani Heavy Metal Parking Lot. Director Miles Lagoze serves as a Combat Camera, shooting recruitment videos for the US Marines. This excised footage ranges from daily routines raiding Afghan hash farms and finding giant holes to finally recording Christmas greetings for back home, offering a behind-the-scenes spontaneous look at the mindset and mood swings of military life. Screened at film festivals last year, it’s now playing a limited theatrical run in select cities.
